Again, webupd8.org comes to the rescue.  The single biggest tweak you can do when moving to gnome 3 is to add the webupd8 ppa which contains loads of gnome extensions:

Enter the following in the terminal and then browse using synaptic (assuming you've already installed synaptic):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update
